Photos - Trans Siberia Express 2002
A long standing wish became trough in 2002 when we travelled from St. Petersburg to Shanghai by train. We decided to follow the Trans Mongolian route from Irkutsk rather than going all the way to Vladivostok with the famous Tarns Siberia Express, as this route gave the opportunity to also see Mongolia and China. We did not yet have a digital camera in 2002 so we do not have that many pictures of the journey.
We first stayed a couple of days in St. Petersburg and Moscow before we boarded the Trans Siberian Train. Staying four days in a train crossing the endless Russian Taigas turned out to be a fantastic experience. The feeling of timelessness brings you in a very relaxed state of mind, drinking sessions with the Russians provide great entertainment and the rhythm of the train makes you sleep like a baby. We stayed a couple of days in Irkutsk, the biggest city of Siberia and then moved on to Mongolia. We first stayed two days in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator and then stayed two days in a Ger on the steppes. The next stop was Beijing were we visited the Great, Forbidden Palace, Hall of the people and many other places. The final destination of our journey was Shanghai, a giant metropolis and great city to spend a couple of days.
