Photos - China
We decided to include China in our 2002 grand train journey because the country developed so quickly that much things of our interest may be gone the next opportunity we had to go there. We first stayed some days in the capital Beijing were we visited the Great Hall of the People, National Museum and the Mao mausoleum. Finally we took a high speed train to Shanghai the last city of our train journey.
We entered China in Erlian were the bogeys of our train had to be changed by raising the whole carriage and swap the Mongolian for a Chinese bogey. Our hotel in Beijing was very close to Tiananmen Square were we visited the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum, Mao Mausoleum and the Forbidden cities. Most fun however was hanging around in the narrow streets of the Beijing Hutongs, of which many disappeared the next time we were in Beijing. We made daytrips to the Great Wall Mutianyu and the Ming Tombs and the Spirit Way close to Beijing. The final part of our train journey that started in St. Petersburg went by brand new high speed train to Shanghai. Shanghai is probably the biggest city in the world and everything is big fast and shiny, we called it Hong Kong on steroids. After two days walking around in this giant metropolis we flew back home and were sure we would come back in most of the places we visited!
