We started our 2006 grand journey in the former Soviet Republic Belarus and stayed in Minsk for a couple of days before taking the night train to Kiev. Minsk is a typical Soviet Republic capital with grand Stalinist Neo Classical architecture and many Soviet era monuments, museums, warehouses and restaurants. We spend almost all our time in Minsk walking trough the city centre and shot many interesting photos.
Belarus is one of the former Soviet republics were the least has changed since the break-up of the Soviet Union. Economic reform has been minimal, statues of Lenin, Kalinin and KGB founder Dzerzhinsky are still standing and the president is a dictator in true Soviet fashion. Minsk was totally destroyed after World War II, so almost all of the architecture is from the communist era. Soviet style propaganda promoting president Lukashenko, the Army or the heroic workers of Belarus are seen everywhere in the streets of Minsk. So no wonder that Comtourist decided to spend a couple of day’s in Minsk before touring the Ukraine in 2006. It turned out to be an excellent decision, not only is Minsk a beautiful city in grand Stalinist Neo Classical style, the people are also very friendly and hospitable to foreign tourists. We had a couple of fund days in Minsk and were sure to return to Belarus one time to see a bid more of the country!
