Photos - Crimea
We spend most time of our 2006 Ukraine holiday on the Crimean peninsula, leaving the Easter and Western Ukraine for a next visit. The Crimea is an area soaked in history with many famous places like Sevastopol, Yalta and Balaklava. We were able to shoot some very interesting photos for the Russian Black Sea fleet in Sevastopol and inside a secret submarine base in Balaklava.
The night train from Kiev arrives around midday in Sevastopol and much of the Russian Black Sea fleet can already be seen from the train. The large presence of the Russian Navy, many Soviet monuments and import role in history make Sevastopol a great city to stay a few days. There are also many things to see around Sevastopol, most notably the World War II museum at Hill and the secret submarine base at Balaklava. Yalta was the most famous Black Sea holiday resort of the USSR and the location of the famous Yalta conference. We stayed in the famous Intourist Hotel Yalta a giant complex were many lucky Soviet citizens spend their summer holiday. The last place on the Crimea we visited was Simferopol mainly famous for the Tatars that lived there in the past and recently returned from exile in Central Asia.
