Photos - Riga Aviation Museum
Comtourist has used Riga Airport as a hub for further travel into the former Soviet Union on many occasions in the past. Every time we noticed the impressive collection of old Soviet Aircraft near the runway. We found out that these aircraft belong to the Riga Aviation Museum but never found the time to visit the museum. In 2007 we spend a couple of days in Riga so we decided to drive to the airport and visit this fantastic museum.
The Riga Aviation Museum is an bi product if the Young Pilots Club founded in 1956. This club trained promising students into pilots from a young age. Students also head to learn the basics of aviation engineering, old aircraft were restored for this purpose. The director of the club had good contacts in the Soviet Air Force so many written off jets were donated to the club. After the fall of the Soviet Union the club lost its funding and the director decided to turn it into a museum. The impressive collection is not in a very good state, despite the fact that young volunteers are still maintaining the aircraft. We really enjoyed the fantastic collection of the Riga Aviation museum and recommend everybody to visit it when waiting for a transfer flight on Riga Airport.
