Photos of the Wreck Museum and OKA-18
The Dutch Island Terschelling is an unlikely place to find anything relating to Soviet history. The most famous ship wreck however is the OKA-18, a Soviet coaster that sunk in 1966 after a collision with a Liberian ship. Many items have been recovered from the wreck and are now displayed in the local Wreck Museum. Comtourist took the boat to Terschelling and checked out the history of the OKA-18.
Hundreds of ships wrecks can be found around the Island of Terschelling. The OKA-18 is probably the most famous one because its cranes have been visible above the waterline from the beach up till 1998. Various interesting items like the shipyard plate, a Soviet flag and cooking gear were salvaged by local divers. Many of these items are displayed in the Wreck museum together with many other interesting items like a collection found on wrecks around Terschelling. The museum also has a collection of Russian Vodka bottles that were thrown overboard and were found on the beaches of Terschelling. The wreck museum is based on the attic of a cafe and well worth a visit when on Terschelling.
