Photos - Russian Air Force museum Monino

Monino Central Air Force Museum is Russia’s biggest aviation museum and probably one of the biggest in the world. It is a must see for any aviation enthusiast and especially for those interested in Soviet aircraft. Almost every Soviet build airplane or helicopter is displayed at Monino; many exhibits are prototypes or the only remaining aircraft of its type. Comtourist went to Monino in 2008 with the help of Russian friends who arranged the trip for us.

The Central Air Force Musuem was opened in 1960, on Monino Air Force base close to Moscow, with a collection of 14 aircraft. Today the Museum has more then 170 aircraft, together with many other exhibits on display in the museum buildings. In the past foreigners were required to have special military permission to visit the museum, but today it is open for everybody. There are various companies that offer day trips to Monino, these are expensive however. The museum is close to a railway station, so can be reached by train, hiring a cab for a day may be an other good alternative. Any aviation or military enthusiast should reserve a day to visit Monino during a visit of Moscow. The former airbase now turned museum is still part of a closed military village with guards checking guest at the entrance. Inside the village are various Soviet monuments including a Lenin statue. We photographed almost every aircraft of the museum, so enjoy these photos.
